Do you remember that at the beginning of the blog I told you that I will set challenges to myself here?! Well here is one. I ventured into the art of lettering.
What is lettering and what is the difference between typography, calligraphy and lettering? Well, typography represents the way of using characters which exist with the aim of an “industrial” use. Calligraphy is the art of writing letters according to established forms, whereas lettering is the art to draw letters by combining different styles and with the aim of a single use. Actually, the lettering is the customization of the calligraphy with an approach similar to the graffiti (from which it comes from). I found this definition on this website.
So here are my attempts at lettering. Tell me what you think about it. Personally, I am not very satisfied with the results. To have more regular letters, I should have respected the bordering lines more, which I drew above and below my texts. It is also good to vary the types and styles of the letters. This did not come to me naturally, so I let myself be inspired by Pinterest. I found that the exercise was not so easy, but I think that we need to be rigorous, at least at the beginning, to have a nice result.
For the texts I was inspired by the books Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass. And then I varied my tries and went out of the stiff side of practicing lettering, to have fun with it!
